Description
I do believe luck favors the well prepared and that I would rather be lucky than good. Yesterday morning I was out in the garden shooting our late blooming hibiscus. Got some good shots (see Flora) and was pretty satisfied. I had to move some yard flags that Chrissy put up for Thanksgiving but I forgot to put them back. I went back out to replace them early in the afternoon and spied this spotted cucumber beetle munching away on the pollen of the hibiscus. I half shocked Chrissy when I burst in the door to grab the camera. As it turned out it lingered for quite a while and after I got some shots with the 70-200 I went back in and grabbed the high mag rig. With the Macro lens I had to shoot a lot of bursts to try to catch a tiny break in the breeze that would allow some clarity with the slow SS. I could have bumped the ISO but the A77 doesn’t perform as well as the A7rIII at higher ISO so I try to stay at 400 or less. All in all a serendipitous moment made possible by simply forgetting to replace the flag. >=))>
Specific Feedback
I set the WB the same in post processing but still see a difference in color. Too noticeable?

Very well done, Bill. I do notice what appears to be a difference in color, but you might check the same spot in both with the color picker to see. The yellow is so much more of the macro image that it could be an optical illusion.
I’m glad you included the wider view since it provides so much scale - teeny bug in a big landscape. I really like the color repetition and the delicate pose you caught. I’d have run inside, too, there is no predicting insects! You should forget to do stuff more often.
Oh, this is really nice, Bill. I agree with @Kris_Smith you need to forget to do stuff more often so you can find a pose like this. So glad he lingered long enough for you to get your high mag gear and get that real close shot of him. He stands out so nicely against the red. Well done!
Bill, these are two fine looks at both the flower and the beetle. I do especially like the close up view. As for the color balance, I’m sure that Adobe adjusts the color balance based on what colors are in the image. Thus, having the extra green in the full view changes the color balance (showing reduced red saturation while the beetle looks pretty similar). (I think that’s even true if you set a color balance.)
@Shirley_Freeman and @Kris_Smith : My ability to forget things is pretty legendary around here. I’m convinced my gray hairs are memory cells that have escaped. Thanks for the nice comments. >=))>
