Bumblebee on Checkermallow

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was trying to get some bee images for our county fair and this plant had quite a few visitors, so I set up with my birding lens at more or less minimum focal distance. This was my favorite from the session.

Specific Feedback

I thought about cropping this tighter, but with this plant the tall stalks of blooms are part of the beauty and I wanted to include at least a hint of that while still keeping the bee reasonably large in the frame. Did it work?

Technical Details

Sony A1, FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, tripod, f/9, 1/1600, iso 1600. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped from a horizontal original. Nearly full frame vertically. Taken June 22nd at 1:30 p.m. under overcast skies.

Wonderful!! The soft light was perfect to bring out the colors and details, and I love the fading blooms at the bottom of the stalk. They not only tell a story but provide a very nice base. And applause for your 840mm macro! Magnification is magnification… And the crop gave more DOF than if you had gone vertical and moved closer. Today’s sensors and sharp lenses are so amazing!

Dennis: Great use of your long lens (it’s rising on my must have list). Love the detail in the bee and the perfect BG. Top notch shot. >=))>

Dennis, I like the way you included more of the flower, showing it’s beauty and the bee’s environment. There is plenty of detail in the bee to enjoy both. I will have to consider using my birding lens for macro! Great shot.

Your comp is perfect, imo. Great pose from the bee, fine detail, and bright flower colours against the sweet BG.

A lovely image, Dennis. I especially like the colorful pollen sac in sharp focus; the bee is positioned perfectly for the shot.
