The second image I had things off, so this fixed it

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

The bees are here every day now in my yard. This plant is quite large with many flowers that bees love. I was after a close-up photo with a bee with some nice pollen on it. Still hot in Arizona but I sit on a chair level with the bees right into bush.

Specific Feedback

I was going to crop more inward from the LLC, but I wonder if it adds to the photo with the bee in the environment. Thoughts? I darken the background some as well as the other white flowers on the left and right side.

Beautiful detail in the bee, Dean. I don’t think you need to crop any tighter. The flowers in that corner balance the composition nicely and any closer would crowd the bee pretty badly. I like your shooting technique-I use the same thing for backyard birds.

Dean, I agree with Dennis on this, I don’t think it needs any further crop. Nicely done. Patience is the virtue and it sounds like you have it, sitting and waiting. I have a tendency to “chase after the bees” rather than sit and wait for them.

Hi Dean,

Your comp is fine as presented. The LH side flowers fill in the space like a puzzle piece and the pink petal points to the bee. The bee is nice and sharp and I like the granular appearance of the pollen baskey on the bee’s hind leg. Well done…Jim

Dean, this should be called diving into your dinner… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: It looks very good as presented with the slight softness in the flowers (lower left) helping maintain interest in the bee and its pollen sack.

Wonderful detail on the bee with good action! For my taste, the composition is well-balanced but the brightness of the flowers in the LL pulls my eye. I think they could be toned down a bit without looking unnatural. The cut-off flower in the UR is a bit bothersome, too. Would be interesting to see if it could be included without other distractions – or it could be easily removed.

Dean: My thoughts pretty much echo @Diane_Miller regarding the corners. With this kind of environment it’s hard to decide where to crop so this does work for me. The capture of the bee is one of your best IMO with marvelous details and sharpness. Very well done.>=))>

I love the industrious energy in this shot. She’s diving right in there. Terrific detail - I especially like the ragged wings; a testament to how many miles these critters put on. It’s a happy image, too. I always smile when I see bees of any species doing their thing. Those full pollen baskets are great, too. Nice job.

Thanks for the feedback, @Diane_Miller , @Kris_Smith , @Bill_Fach , @Dennis_Plank , @Shirley_Freeman , and @Mark_Seaver . I put in the suggestions that Diane posted and I agree this update looks much better.

Nice job! The slight crop in the LL reduces the visual interest there. One new nit – the partial flower now introduced on the right is brighter than the full flower next to it. It could be toned down to match or even a little more. Same for the small pieces in the LL corner. The full flower could even be a touch brighter without competing with the bee. It looks just a bit too gray. (Whites are frustrating!)

Gorgeous capture in any case!

Thanks for the notice, I fixed the image now

Looks good!!
