Bryce Canyon Sunrise Spotlight

Original RAW image

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It was the last morning of my week’s stay in Bryce Canyon and I had seen a lot beautiful scenes, from snow covered formations, sunrises and sunsets. The hiking was superb. I chose Inspiration Point for my last shoot at Bryce because I had not been there yet and as many had commented that it was one of the best locations at sunrise. It was a cold and blustery morning but it did not dampen my enthusiasm. I spotted this formation lit by the sunrise, but because I was using my 24-120mm lens at the time, I knew this image was going to be a crop.

Specific Feedback

All feed back welcome. Particularly interested in whether the light in the background detracts from the subject.

Technical Details

Nikon Z8 24-120mm f/4 1/125 sec f/8 ISO 800 @ 120mm Edied in LR/PS/Nik Collection Color Efex. I did soften the background a tad, leaving the subject and foreground in focus.

I would cool this image down, making the shadows slightly blue. Then I would push the oranges. This area is famous for the red earth so color is important.

Gary: One of my favorite places on the planet. I was lucky enough to enjoy this exact scene several years ago. I like the cropped version with its emphasis on the spotlit hoodoos. I found myself using a long lens and extracting smaller scenes which you may want to consider if you go back. I’m OK with your color management. Nicely seen and captured. >=))>

Noted, Igor. Thx.

Good point, Bil. I had a longer lens with me, but I did not want to loose the light on this subject. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t.

The rework looks great Gary. The crop and small tweaks to the color place more of an emphasize on that rock formation basking in that beautiful light. I also like the trees scattered about the landscape as they add a nice sense of scale to the scene. I think the light in the BG looks just fine. Very nicely done.
