Description
I came across this scene whilst walking down a track on our property. The trees along the track are casting an increasingly dark shadow, but this male Orange-tip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines) was nectaring away on a head of emerging cow parsley in a beautiful patch of sunlight - I managed to get down on the ground and receive this image without disturbing him. I’m very much in love with the way he stands out so boldly against the shadowed background (emphasised just a little I have to say).
Specific Feedback
Personally, I like this darker image and the way the butterfly sits in the frame; I tried a tighter crop as well as lightening the image a little, but it didn’t work for me - what do you think?

Godfrey: I love lighting conditions like this and think you have a marvelous capture. Great detail in the butterfly and I like how its coloring blends in with the plants. Excellent comp and a superb result. >=))>
It’s gorgeous! I love how the butterfly’s patterns fit so well with the shapes and colors of the flowers. I like the image as it is–I wouldn’t change anything!
Beautifully done, Godfrey. The dark background works very will in this image and the composition is superb. I also like the way it shows how the coloration of the butterfly seems to mimic the cow parsley which makes me think it might be this species preferred plant.
Nice shot. Butterfly and flowers are sharp and in focus. The darkness in the BG works well for the comp. I would think that cropping some from the bottom and less from the top may also work for you as long as you do not lighten the BG. I like the darkness of the BG. Awesome photo…Jim
I somehow missed your previous primrose photo, so I’ll say welcome to NPN here. This reminds me of growing up in Ireland. I’ve always loved the patterning of the Orange-tip’s underwings. I wouldn’t change anything here, as the composition and the careful balancing of bright subjects and dark BG are both excellent. Looking forward to more of your shots!
