The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
Taken last May at the Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland at the annual butterfly exhibit. I was happy to capture this butterfly partially hidden behind the purple flowers, with the eye and wing details still coming through clearly. The way the butterfly remained so visible behind the plant was a bit of a happy accident, and one of the things I ended up liking most about the image. I do wish I had been able to leave a little more space above the butterfly, but unfortunately it moved before I could recompose the shot.
Specific Feedback
I’d appreciate any feedback on composition, focus, processing, or anything else that stands out to you. I’m still learning and always open to suggestions.

Veiled is right! It took me a few seconds to find the entire outline of the butterfly. The window view is pretty cool, but I wonder if it’s a tad too wide…?? Not sure. I think the colors are so interesting - a cool mix of putty and gray and that bright purple really adds an unexpected lift. Great sharpness in the eye and seems the rest of the wings and body fall on the same plane…sweet. I do wish that top wing wasn’t clipped though. (sad face) Butterflies are notoriously uncooperative.
Joyce, the butterfly peeking through the flowers is a fine concept and good way to show both the bf and it’s habitat. The sharpness of the butterfly looks great. One “fix” for the clipped wing would be to crop more, so the focus is almost totally on the eye and antennae.
Joyce: This is a great capture of a great subject. Nailing the eye is critical and you got that perfectly. Here’s a slightly different take addressing the clipped wingtip (Generative expand in PS) and some tighter cropping. I find butterflies much more challenging than dragonflies and you carried this off extremely well. >=))>
Bill,
That is perfect! I use Luminar, which also has a gen expand add on which I added on. I will see if I can do the same. Thanks so much! It definitely looks better.
Hidden butterflies: a whole new world opens up to me. But if I will ever be able to achieve anything as good as this picture, remains to be seen. Maybe I am not severe enough, but should a clipped wing be such a topic of discussion? The butterfly did not cooperate. We know they are like that, always hungry, always looking for the next flower. So? Let’s crop more? Let’s generatively expand? I like the image as it was taken, showing us the world as it is. Nice job. And a source of inspiration.
Joyce, you did a fine job capturing the details of the BF. Sometimes when things are in front they have a tendency to grab the focus. I’m okay with the tip of the wing cropped, or crop even more, but AI sure is giving more options when critters don’t cooperate! Nicely done.
