Wow, I’ve never come across a shot of one of these before, let alone the real thing. Nit-pecker me would remove that brown chilli-pepper-like object just above the lichen. I’d also like to see the BG behind that beautiful head darkened a bit for contrast. What a moment for you to capture - thanks for sharing it.

I’ll second Mike’s “WOW”. What a beautiful woodpecker. Great detail and well composed. Background works well with the woodpecker’s colors. Thanks for showing us this interesting bird.

Nice, Sandy. Excellent detail and a great perch to catch it on. I like the “chili pepper”.

Super cool shot. Just one more reason to cause me to want to visit Costa Rica.

@Dave_Douglass The birds (and other critters) are simply spectacular. unbelievable. fantastic. Makes me sad to think what few really amazing birds we have in the US. Let me know if you need suggestions for bird tours, etc.

Hey, thanks for that offer.

Great catch. Spectacular bird, very nice perch and a beautiful BG.
No nits for me, thanks for sharing.

Hi Sandy, great to see this amazingly striking bird that I did not know existed til now. Need to go to Costa Rica also. Wonderful details, colors, perch, and BG. No nits. Well done.

Wow, what a cool looking bird. I agree with @Allen_Sparks about needing a trip to Costa Rica one of these days. Great shot on this one too.
