Nuttall's Woodpecker

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Another image from my recent California trip and another woodpecker. This time it is a Nuttall’s. This was taken in my brother’s backyard - he get one or two of these birds to visit his feeders regularly - so it was a lot lesser effort than my previous image. Nonetheless, I was happy to get an image of this very local species.

Specific Feedback

Composition, exposure.

Technical Details

840mm, 1/250s@F7.1, ISO4000 (was rather dark and rainy most of the time I was there). Cropped a little and processed for the web.

A great look at this fellow! Tack-sharp bird, sweet pose, nice BG. F10 or so would have rendered all the bark sharp as well.
Nice catch!

Beautiful job, Govind. Great pose from the woodpecker, a nice composition with the bird well placed in the frame, super head turn and nicely balanced position of the tree trunk. An extremely well executed image.

Yes, very nice in all regards! I could see taking some off the top to feature the bird even more. I’ve only seen a few of these in our area – I wonder if they are driven away by the hordes of Acorn Woodpeckers we have.

I’m curious where this one was seen – I keep hoping for more in our area.

Thank you all for your positive feedback.

@Diane_Miller: This was taken in Alameda very close to the bay.

Very nice Govind! A great pose and fine detail and exposure on the bird. Subject is well placed in the frame with that upwards glance.
