Cloud Iridescence

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I went out yesterday to explore Ice on the Potomac after one of the coldest spells in years. There was some good ice at Great Falls (photos to come) but I moved on to try and catch sunset at the Mouth of the Monococy, since the cloud forecast was for late clearing. Sadly, the clouds cleared completely about an hour before sunset. However, as the edge of the cloud moved past it showed some of the strongest Iridescene that I’ve seen in many years. Here’s one take. There is a contrail that I’m leaving in because 3-5 PM is prime take off and landing for all three of the major airports. I have another shot with 2 planes and 2 contrails but not as much iridescence.

Specific Feedback

A good look at one of the many optical effects that our sky provides.

Interesting image Mark. It’s extremely difficult to create an image of the sky that unique. I think this one gets there however. To me it’s an image about a rare occurrence in nature and a celebration of nature’s beauty. I think a crop eliminating the contrail enhances the image and brings the focus back to nature.

Hi Mark,
This is quite striking IMHO as it is a unique take on some wonderful cloud color. The colors reflected in the water are extraordinary; especially those greens and pinks toward the top of the frame. I think this is the only time a jet contrail did not bother me. Beautifully done!

Wow! What clouds. The iridescent colors are divine. How fortuitous that you were in the right place at the right time. This is such an unusual cloud image. I just love clouds.

Ditto! (Amazingly beautiful, and wow, I hate contrails.)
