Colored Tree Trunk

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was hiking a trail early this spring before most of the leaves had grown on the trees and came across this old tree trunk with very interesting colors.

Specific Feedback

I am just looking for an overall impression to see if you think the combination of the 4 different colors and the texture on the wood leads to an interesting image.

Technical Details

  • Emotional Impact and Mood:
I like the emotional impact this has. The dark tonal values and lines add emotion to it.

  • Composition:
The composition is interesting in that there is an oval look to it. I wonder if this can be enhanced in processing by bending the lines, bowing them outwards.?

  • Balance and Visual Weight:
I feel that the image is leaning slightly downward from left to right. I would make a slight correction in the counter clockwise direction. Very small.

  • Color:
The color is good and appropriate for this mood.

  • Lighting:
The lighting is subdued which helps with the mood.

Hi Mike, welcome to the NPN community!

Yes, I believe the colors, lines, and texture make this an interesting image. Igor mentioned the lines and some potential improvements there. They do help lead my eye across the frame.

The lighting looks nice and even. You could try boosting the shadows a bit and bringing up the midtones. The colors are natural looking. Technically this is a good image.

Abstract photographs typically go beyond the literal representation of a scene and often have mystery to them. Next time you’re out in Nature, look for tree trunks with these additional qualities in them. Perhaps you’ll come across one that has a unique line pattern or contains symbolism and metaphor.

Yes, I feel the colors, textures and lines all add up to a pleasing image.
