Common Murre

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I liked the pose and was lucky to get a head turn. Now that I see it on NPN, I realize it’s soft at the highest magnification, looked okay in PS at 100%. Oh well.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Allen. How do you handle your export to jpg? I keep seeing lots of recommendations to export at 60% quality, but I never do. In LR I can select the maximum size of the file after export and I’ve set that at 2 MB and the quality at 100% and never bumped up against the size limit.

I do like the image. Not an easy bird to get and the head turn works nicely.

Very nice pose! I can definitely see the softness you refer to. I played with it a little in PS. I didn’t like my attempt at sharpening the head, so I just sharpened around the eye, brightened the white line below the eye and added a catch light. To me it looks a little better (but I am a little biased).

Hi Dennis, I export my images in PS using “export as” (Command/control +Option/alt +shift +w). Here’s the screen shot.

I generally leave the defaults in place, though may adjust the width or increase quality from 6 to 7.

Nice look at this pelagic bird Allen. Nice wingspread and head turn.

I think you can go to the maximum quality without pushing the limits on size of the file as long as you have a half-way decent internet connection. I don’t know if it will make any difference in the appearance of the full sized image, but it’s odd that it looked good before export.
