Coquille Sunset

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

While at a workshop given by Susan Dimock in Bandon, OR, I was riding in a car with NPN member Mark Muller when going over a bridge I saw gorgeous pastel fog over the Coquille River. I yelled at him to turn around and go back. We hustled out of the car and up onto the bridge in time to capture this amazing sunset. Right place at the right time.

All feedback is welcome.

Lovely. Glad you asserted yourself and made Mark turn around. I’m looking hard for something to critique and can’t find anything. Well done.

That’s like pink lemonade you can drink with your eyes!

Fog does wonderful things at the coast, and that’s pure magic that you were able to combine it with sky color. (I find sunset color to be much less common than I would like when at the coast.) The posts work really well as anchors, and I love that the two on the right are repeated doubles.

My only wish, and it’s a nit, is that the posts led in the same direction as the water. The posts have a natural progression for my eye from small to large/right to left. The water flows up, and is weighted to the right. If those two elements led the eye in the same direction, the image would have slightly better flow IMHO.

@Michael_Lowe Thank you for your great comment! Mark didn’t have much choice. I told him I would jump out of the car. A bit dramatic, but I was so excited to see the fog, colors, and light.

@John_Williams Thanks. I can see your point and agree. I suppose if I was a Photoshop whiz, I could make that happen. Alas, I’ve never been able to get the hang of PS.

Hi Chris,
This is a flat out gorgeous ethereal scene dripping with mood! I have been sitting here for a couple of minutes just enjoying the pink pastels along with the serenity of this image. Glad you were able to get Mark to stop as it would have been a shame to miss capturing this. What a great way to end the day; no suggestions from me.

Who doesn’t like a great sunset and sunrise? I much prefer pastels rather than the full blown reds and oranges. Pastels are softer and less harsh and to my eyes you’ve hit the jackpot on pastels in this image. I can certainly see why you yelled at Mark to pull over. This is a very pleasing minimalist image about softness and contrasting dark lines in those wood beams coming out of the water. It would have been a good image without the poles but it’s spectacular with them. I also love that there are lots more pier poles along the left hand side of the image near the shore and at lands end on the left as well. I also love how the fog eats up the transition line between the bay and the ocean, melting into the sky. I can’t find a single thing to nit about. You have great balance although the left is a little bit heavier than the right, you have ridiculous light to play with and you nailed the exposure, the colors are amazing, it’s dripping with mood, and the composition is really good although if you have more canvas on the right side I’d be tempted to add it and lastly, the depth or rather lack of depth gives this image the mood and the minimalism that this image imparts to the viewer. Superb job at recognizing an amazing scene, capturing it and getting Mark to pull the car over.

What a beautiful scene, and image… It is delicate and ethereal, suspended in time and space… The color palette is perfect. And congratulations for a very well deserved EP!

Another one I missed, and glad I’m seeing it now – classic beauty!! Congratulations on a very well-deserved EP!

A very beautiful scene expertly crafted. No nits, here. I love the soft color and the hints of blue. Wonderfully moody and somewhat mysterious.

Congrats on the well deserved EP!

@Preston_Birdwell @Diane_Miller @Ed_Lowe @Antonello_Provenzale Thank you all for your kind comments.

Thank you for your in-depth comments. Very much appreciated.

Hi Chris,

I remember seeing this a few days ago and being impressed. One thing came to mind which I didn’t comment then but will do so now. What would this look like without the large post on the left? Would it emphasize the minimalism even more by making it more minimalistic? If you happened to make such a composition but decided against it then I would love to see it. These days I usually make several compositions of a subject I like and then evaluate their merits at a later time.

Chris: I know that bridge you’re describing and you really took advantage of a marvelous opportunity. As @John_Williams said, “That’s like pink lemonade you can drink with your eyes!” >=))>

I’’ give it a shot and let you know.

Thank you!
