Image Description

While on a hike near my house I spotted this Tree Oyster just off a popular trail. As I went about photographing this and some neighboring fungus a lot of people stopped to see what I was doing. The most common comment I heard went something Like" I walk this trail every day and never noticed that before."

What a great find of an amazing fungal specimen Paul. It’s hard to judge the size of it since you took the shot with a wide angle lens up closer. Just how big is it? My only suggestion would be to darken and reduce the clarity of the background to add emphasis to the main subject.

Gorgeous job on this image, Paul. The wide angle close-up really works well. I see the point @Ted_Forman was making, though I suspect the inclusion of the background was intentional. But I do think you could bring it down a bit without losing it. Still the eye can’t help going to that gorgeous fungus right away.

Your flash does a fine job of letting this mushroom stand out from it’s surroundings. While I wouldn’t darken the sky (as it already looks on the dark side). I would burn-in the brightest whites towards the left. I see some detail there already, but a bit more burning-in would let it blend better with the rest of the fine details in this mushroom.

What a fabulous image. I’m losing myself in the sharp details of the mushroom and craggy tree. Thank you for sharing.

I am always on search for fungi in the forest, and what a great opportunity to get below such a large specimen. Great shot!

Gorgeous capture of this wonderful specimen! Beautiful lighting!

I love the image, but agree with @Ted_Forman and @Dennis_Plank recommend darkening the background a touch so it is not distracting attention away from the mushroom
