Cubby's Dinner - Series

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We came upon this small pride of lions that our guide told us had learned to surround and kill young adult elephants. They were working on a kill from 4 days ago (see the maggots). They surround and follow the elephant and repeatedly slash behind it’s ears, to tear the arteries of this blood-rich area. The elephant then sadly bleeds to death.

I really like the second image best in this one Sandy. I love the direct eye contact. What a huge dinner for the little cub. The last image is great with both adults obviously stuffed, and looking a bit miserable while the little one keeps happily chewing away.

This series showcases a raw, powerful and complex natural history moment. It evokes awe at the strength and skill of the lions, but it also highlights the harshness of nature. I like the second image a lot with great eye contact.

Fascinating scene and a fine capture of the opposite ends of the life cycle. I do prefer the first by quite a bit (great expression on the cub’s face), but think it could very easily be tightened up from left and top to remove some of the “messy” bits and also help focus all our attention on that great shape of the cub and leg. It also makes it slightly more abstract, which will likely boost the viewer’s reaction once they realize what they’re seeing.

Wow, what a scene. The circle of life can be horrid to see, but it is how it all works. I’ve never heard of them killing an elephant this way. Yes, sad for sure. But one thing about animals, rarely do they kill to kill. They kill to survive and eat. Adorable image of the little one just getting his growing food in. He’ll be a big boy soon enough. Thank you for sharing this.
