I only do Flora shots a few times a year–Spring for Irises and Roses, and late summer for Dahlias. So I am by no means skilled at it. This year I had to wait for the local Dahlia farm to open for their festival at 9am. Of course in late summer, the light up here is pretty harsh by that time. Fortunately, last Saturday was overcast so a friend and I scooted down there for a few shots. I decided to go hand held because it would be so crowded, which was a wise choice. I also decided to shoot wide open and play around with impressionistic type of imaging. Here’s one result.
I like it. You should shoot flowers…or mushrooms (ha!) more often. This has such a fresh feeling about it. Those smooth, silky petals; I can almost feel them. The colors are so gorgeous, too. Subdued, yet vivid in a sensual way. So opposite of Aunt Dahlia of P.G. Wodehouse fame.
I could see a little bit of emphasis on the darker areas if you have a mind.
I love it!! What delicate little bits of sharp petal edges, and the rest so silky soft and reaching out! The light is perfect and the OOF areas still retain their character. You really should do this sort of thing more often!
