DANCING ROSE

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

With ICM, I was trying to create some movement for the rose to have the edges slightly blurred. After several tries, I liked the soft curves in the petals on this image.

Specific Feedback

I was disappointed with the background of the original image (brown fence in background). I tried a black background and then found a texture to soften the background. A day later, I saw the original again a felt the movement in the fence was nice, but I’m concerned about the dark areas in the lower right corner. A distraction? I am looking for feedback/suggestions re the background and my two approaches or something else to try. Also, is one large flower in the middle of the frame attractive?

I like the second, Ann, for the lighter feel of it. The angled stem also aids the sense of motion that you achieved. For my taste the large flower in the center works quite nicely.

Ann, the second one is lovely and my favorite of th two. Beautiful rose, Nicely blurred, centered is just fine here, and the angled stem adds a lot of interest.
Great work !

Ann, I too prefer the second image. The angle of the stem helps amplify the movement in the petals and the background has a great neutral quality to it. The first image feels to busy especially with the uneven background.

A single flower centered in the composition can work quite well as shown in your second image. I would recommend reducing the brightness of the highlights in the petals especially on that lower section.

Lovely experiment!! I like both, with very pleasing blurs. I like the higher contrast in the rose, compared to the second. I think the first could be nice with a dark edge vignette, which maybe doesn’t need to extend to the already dark LR corner.

I think the second could also use a dark vignette, which seems to work often with a single centered subject. Maybe darken and increase contrast on the flower to be more like the first one.

@Dennis_Plank , @SandyR-B , @Alfredo_Mora , @Diane_Miller , Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. I will work on the bright highlights and increasing the contrast on the flower of the second version. Thanks for suggesting a vignette in both versions. I can see how it will make the center image stand out.

Adjusted contrast and added vignette.

Yes – I think that’s a nice touch! With something this abstract I’m always tempted to go really dramatic with vignettes.

Nice job on the vignette, Ann, but for my taste, the stem works better in the original version where it’s showing more of the background texture.
