Defending Her Calf

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I took this image in 2019 as a pack of wild dogs was attempting to make a kill in a herd of oryx. The calf in the image became separated from its mother for an instant. As some of the dogs went for the calf, the mother came to the calf’s rescue and used her horns to fend off the dogs. In doing so, she pushed the calf down but with no ill effects as both mother and calf survived the attack.
When taking this image, I got the vehicle’s black roll bar in the very bottom of the frame. My attempts at removing it weren’t good at all mostly due to operator error.
I always liked the image and decided to try the Remove tool which I think has done a credible job.

Specific Feedback

I took this image with an APSC camera and an 80- 400 lens at 80 and would like to have been wider but think that it does capture the action. What’s your reaction to the image framed as is?

Technical Details

D500 and 80-400 lens at f/8, 1/800 and Auto ISO 1800.

What an amazing capture!! Wider would have been nice but you did the best possible with what you had. The SS stopped the action and the light is gorgeous, as is her pose. The repair job on the bottom edge looks very good. If it fits your ethics you might add a little canvas on the right and see if you could get a good fill. I’d bet on it. The left side would be harder but everything is worth a try.

Amazing catch, Richard! Wonderful action pose from a protective mama. I’m glad the calf didn’t get the points of those horns, but only knocked down.
Superb!

I immediately thought “amazing” too. What a use for those horns, and so glad there was a happy ending.

I just love the body language here, very nicely captured. It was very narrow for the calf.
IMHO it is very tight in the frame, I do wish it was within the range of your lens and wild dog was more visible.

I had to see what Generative Expand might do here. The dogs aren’t perfect but the addition on the right amazed me. And I could have expanded the canvas even more.

Diane, Sandy, Mike and Jagdeep: many thanks to all of you for your comments with special thanks to Diane for her rendering which looks great.

Amazing what the rendering did here. Because my eye was pulled immediately to the missing tip of the oryx’ tail in the original. Which of course is understandable that it wasn’t there given the speed of the action and the limitation of your lens. The rendering is something I personally wouldn’t do, but that’s just me. But the action is so good and unique, I would have no problem showing the original as is. Beautiful! Grt, Ingrid.

Ingrid: many thanks for your comment. I toyed with the idea of adding canvas but decided against it. I have no problem with folks who like to experiment with technological advances and appreciate what Diane was able to accomplish and post. I obviously had no problem in removing the black roll bar so that’s my limit. Richard
