Desert Bighorn Coming Up

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This young ram was accompanying about eight ewes and four kids out on the East side of Zion NP. They just worked their way right past right under where I was standing and kept right on going.

Specific Feedback

I never got a really good pose from this young ram, and it never even looked up at me as it was walking right past me. I liked the movement of him stepping up the slope in this one.

Technical Details

Canon 7DMii, f8, 1/2500 sec, iso 800, -1 EV, 100-400 lens with 1.4 TC at 140 mm.

Ed, this is a handsome young fellow. The light was not your friend, but we have to take what nature gives us. I decided to see what I could do using the TK9 plugin in PS to target the bright FG. Here is a screenshot showing my steps. I used the remove tool to clean up some of the foliage and sticks. Then, I created a luminosity mask of the brightest tones in the FG. I desaturated and darkened them. I then used the Camera Raw Filter to open up the shadows on the Ram. Next, I drew a freehand mask and used the vignette action in the TK9 to darken much of the BG. I don’t know what I would do without the Tony Kuyper plugins for PS. I use them on every picture I edit. It gives one so much control. Thanks for posting this wonderful insight into the lives of our mountain goats.

Really nice image, Ed - and a great improvcement with Barb’s suggestions and instructions. Nice climbing pose and natural environment.

For those interested, Sean and Tony have a whole bunch of free things, and even the inexpensive paid panels, instructions, etc are 25% off right now.

Wow! @Barbara_Djordjevic, thank you for doing this for me. Unfortunately, I don’t have Photoshop. I do have Photoshop Elements and I’m sure it has a lot of the same functionality. I need to learn more about PS and how to use it. I’ve been kind of a dinosaur with software and processing. I really need to evolve out of the dark ages a bit more.
@SandyR-B thanks for the resource recommendation. I remember Tony from years ago here at NPN. He does some amazing post processing work.
