Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I photographed this on a breezy spring day. Using a tripod was impossible because the flower moved so much. So I shot it at a comfortably high ISO and shutter speed and managed to stop the motion and get the composition I was after. I then processed in PS to achieve a low-key B&W effect. I also call this technique my “light at the end of the tunnel” technique!

Specific Feedback

Is the separation of the leaves from the background successful? That’s been my main concern, and I had to work on it! Overall, how does the image feel in terms of the crop and location of the flower and leaves in space?

Technical Details

I used my Lensbaby Velvet 56 to capture this, so the f/stop is not included, and I didn’t keep a record of it.

I like the tonalities in the image, Susannah. The leaves are a nice compromise: bright enough to stand out from the background without competing with the bloom. The frame does feel a bit top heavy to me with extra room at the bottom and a bit tight at the top, but that might be your intent.

Susanna: My thoughts pretty much echo Dennis. My conventional brain would prefer the rooms at the top and bottom to be reversed since the flower is “looking” up. The processing and DOF produced is excellent. Nicely done. >=))>

Beautiful Image !!! I love the Tone and simplicity !!!

Pretty stark, but the shape and lighting keeps things soft as well as the texture on display. The crop works ok for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Definitely worth playing with.

I think this is gorgeous!!! I don’t mind the slightly quirky framing because the flower is looking up. I love the composition of the flower and leaves!! It may be your intent, but the brightness seems a bit high on the petals (reducing contrast) and contrast low on the leaves. Here’s a VERY clumsy tweak with Nik CEP Detail Extractor – not by any means the best balance but just to show the idea.

Ok. I stand corrected. What Diane did elevates this another step.
