Double Negative

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I submitted the positive image back on Jan 9th (Egret on the Ice). The egret - appearing black then because in deep shadow - now appears visually positive (ie white) in negative format, as above. And as there is negative space (all the dark ice), the whole thing is negative in 2 different ways. Hence the title.

Specific Feedback

Does it look too processed when checked closely?

Technical Details

D500 + 150-600mm (@280mm) 1/800 F13 ISO 250 +0.33EV

Processing of original submission: Converted to B&W in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. Selected bird and shadow for slight further darkening with PS Exposure and Highlights.

In addition, for this negative format: Curves-Negative in PS, then selected bird and shadow and adjusted mainly with Highlights slider. Minor sharpening of all in PS.

Mike, what a cool and creative approach to the same image. I especially like the grainy look that the edit generated on the ice.

The egret’s head and eye look a bit artificial. Maybe that was the look you were looking for with the image and edit.
