Downy Woodpecker - Recrop

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On a morning walk around our local settling ponds I ran across this downy woodpecker working over this old branch.

Specific Feedback

I cloned out an OOF branch under the left part of the main branch.

Note: Sorry for posting so many images right now. My wife and I are leaving next Tuesday for a four week driving tour up the North American Rocky Mountain Range, coming back down the Pacific Coast, with a one day stop in Eugene during the US Olympic Track and Field Trials.

Technical Details

Canon 7DMii, f8, 1/1000 sec, iso 400, 100-400/1.4TC at 560 mm.

Downie’s have funny personalities and are fun to watch but they are quite skittish. Nice diagonal components and composition. The blue sky works well here.

Hi Ed, nice catch of this Downy. I like the stark wood as a perch and the full view of the bird. Bird seems just a tad soft in largest size though. Nicely composed with the branches going diagonal through the frame and good subject placement.

No need to apologize on posting images. I’m enjoying seeing all that you have. I’d love to see some of the track and field trials in person too – maybe I can just catch some of it on TV.

Sounds like a great tour, Ed.

I like the pose of the downy and it seems fairly sharp if not smuck on. The composition works very well though I think I see your cloning in the lower left and I think a crop from the bottom and a bit from the left would work well to fix it.

Thank you @David_Schoen, @Allen_Sparks and @Dennis_Plank for your help as always. I’ve re-cropped to get rid of the weirdest part of the LLC. I bought a new Canon R5 and 100-500 RF lens last week. Learning how to use it. Excited about the possibilities.
