End of a Storm + rpst

Denoised version

Original

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

When a shaft of late afternoon peeked through the storm clouds and created a rainbow, I was drawn to the contrast between the bright colored bow and the dark, almost hidden mountains.

Specific Feedback

This is all about the contrast between the dark storminess and the brilliant rainbow. This view was cropped to 8.5 x 11 because it didn’t need more darkness on the left, shows most of the rainbow.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 100, 1/20 s, f/14, iso 400, tripod and polarizer

Wow – gorgeous! The composition, contrast and level of BG detail works for me! Wonderful colors!!

Leave it alone! Nature has given you all it needs.

Fantastic capture Mark! I love the conflicting moods of light and darkness here. Absolutely no suggestions from me. Glad you were there to capture this scene.

Love this Mark. The dark storm contrasting with the light and bright color is eye-catching. Did you try running this through Lightroom’s Denoise? If not, I’d be interested to see what it came up with.

John, your question about noise sent me back to the original. Given the relatively low iso, I have a standard amount of noise reduction programmed in LR. It’s not clear that I had even applied that noise reduction. I did try the AI noise reduction and the result is added. While there’s a slight color difference and better contrast in the mountains, the noise reduction is small. That shows that the main problem is the low contrast in the darks and their conversion to jpg.
