Engaged with my Presence: Red Fox Kit #2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My neighbor called me to let me know that a fox family is denning under their barn. First trip was unsuccessful. The second trip was after a rain and ample cloud cover produced weak, but nicely diffused lighting. I moved up closer and thought this shot simmered with cuteness. I also used an off camera flash to add some life to the shadows and highlights. I still needed to use some red-eye control in Lightroom to eliminate the backscatter from the fox’s eyes.

Specific Feedback

What do you think about the post processing? The 600mm and 1.4x teleconverter produced a slightly softer image than desired. Do you think its sharp enough?

Technical Details

Z9 600mm f4 + 1.4x TC (1/1250 sec at f5.6, ISO 1250, fill flash at -2.7ev) DeNoise, Levels, Crop for Comp to vertical, Micro-contrast enhancement, Brightness & Contrast.

How totally cute!! I don’t see anything I would call softness – maybe more just limited DOF, which doesn’t bother me.

Your own private Fox den – make the most of it!! I’d be setting up camp and putting out Fancy Feast.

Thank you @Diane_Miller . This is a first for me. I took over 800 shots and moved up every time they dove back into the den. It is a huge family with 6 kits and would like to see the entire family at once. My neighbor said that she would like to feed them, but it would not work out the best for them. Somebody has to eat some of those extra voles, bunnies and woodchucks that raid my garden…Jim

I’m with Diane - I’d be setting up a tent out there with a wildlife trail cam to alert me every time they appeared!
This is a neat image - hopefullly, they will become less wary of you as time goes on and they realize you are no threat.

Beautifully captured, I just love the curiosity and surprise factor in eyes, as if hide out has been discovered.
