Enough with the Paparazzis!

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Taken this morning at Colusa NWR. A slow start, but I ended up with some reasonable opportunities. After this one leading me a merry chase, it landed on this twig out in the open and nearly head height from the car and gave me three or four minutes.

Specific Feedback

The world was fogged in when I too this with a long way to the background, hence the plain gray. Is that a problem?

Technical Details

Processed in LR & PS CC. Mainly cropping, removing a couple of twigs entering the left side and increasing saturation of the inside of the mouth which looked brighter in the raw file.

Very opinionated little phoebe!
Great look at it’s beak and mouth - I’ve never seen inside before! Very nice detail and cool curved branch.
I guess his left foot is grasping the little blip in the twig?
Fine image, Dennis -

Hi Dennis, all the elements in this image work very well together. The gray branch and light gray background combined with the subtle feathers of the bird. Of course all these work to further highlight the colorful beak and mouth. Really interesting display. I like the subject placement in the frame too. Well done.

Dennis: sometimes we just have to accept the conditions as they are. In this case, the muted tones of the bird and the background make the bird’s beak pop. Initially, I looked at the splash of color and then took the time to admire the rest of the frame. Well done.

Hi Dennis
The background and the branch help to frame bird and the open beak is a plus.

I had no idea a small bird could open its mouth that wide. Do they eat cantaloupe whole?

The curve of the branch is perfect, and the dark grays blend really nicely with the perch. Wonderful photo, Dennis.

Dennis: excellent composition and the bird stands out so well against the light grey background. He appears very determined to express himself.
