Enthusiastic Tandem Bathing

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Spring has finally sprung here in the Mid-Atlantic. Yesterday afternoon, with bright sunshine and temperatures in the 60s (F), a mass of birds came to bath in my water feature. These two Goldfinches got going together and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the bathing, with some wonderful splashing.

Specific Feedback

This was the first time that I had seen the local Goldfinches bath. They routinely come down to drink, but don’t hang around for very long. Their enthusiasm here was great fun to watch and photograph.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 428 (to get both birds in the frame), 1/1000s, f/10, iso 3200, tripod and blind.

Interesting, Mark. I like the vigorous bathing action. Our experience has been that the adult goldfinches aren’t big on baths, but the juveniles go crazy for them. These could be first year birds, or maybe the adults are still molting and trying to get rid of winter plumage. Or maybe our birds are different from the ones in the east.

Wonderful capture! Your pond looks like a gem!

Great action, Mark, with the poses and splashing water and I like the setting.
