The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
The skies were constantly changing that evening. This was photographed from the Babad Do’ag Scenic Overlook looking south over the city of Tucson, Arizona. We were waiting for the city lights to become visible and we were entertained by the ever-changing scene.
Specific Feedback
Any thoughts, impressions, suggestions, or philosophic discussions would be welcomed. This photograph in color is very dramatic. I felt it also worked in black & white so here it is.
Technical Details
FujiFilm GFX 100s, Fujinon 20-35 @ 32.1mm, f/8 @ 1/60, ISO 100, EC -3.67, tripod-mounted. Processed in DxO PhotoLab 9, ACR, and Photoshop.
The drama of the sky comes through very nicely in the B&W, Fred. In the monochrome, the cityscape almost looks like flecks of snow instead of buildings.
@Dennis_Plank Yes, I see what you mean. It sort of reminds me of the buckwheat plants on the lava fields at the Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve in Idaho. This neighborhood of Tucson is quite freeform as to its layout.
For me, the sky is the most interesting part of this image. I like the setting sun glow coming in from the right side of the frame and the really interesting swirling/wavy patterns in the clouds. You can even catch that light hitting the side of the hill. The desert foreground is slightly less interesting to me. Maybe with more Cactus??? I don’t know. I kind of want to see this in color. I’m seeing some desert flowers scattered all around and I really want those to stand out. Just curious why you chose black and white with this image, Fred. If you’ve processed this one in color would you mind sharing it with everyone? I think then I might be able to get a better understanding of going to Black and White for it. Thanks for sharing this one, Fred. It makes me think. And…it makes me want to view it large uncover the details that I’m having a hard time seeing in the small version. That’s a good thing.
@David_Haynes@Igor_Doncov Thank you for the encouraging comments. I would love to have had more cactus in the frame. There were several more saguaro to the right of this scene. I will be posting some of those views eventually. I went back and reprocessed this frame for color. Going over it again and correcting a few mistakes actually improved the B&W as well but I won’t post that.
@Michael_Lowe When I opened the file to work on the color version, I found several processing mistakes. I’ve attached a better B&W photograph for your inspection. Shows what happens when I go too fast.
Huge improvement. I think I still prefer the color version but this newer version of the Black and White takes it way up a couple of notches. Nice rework and thanks for sharing the color version.
