A tough one to photograph and I really couldn’t do it justice. It resided on the dark forest floor and was angled downward. I tried various flash settings, but they didn’t come out looking natural. This was the best I could get.

Allen, what a great find. I love the color of the flower, and how the stem is coordinated with it. The angle is nice, and your low position with the camera works well.
I have photographed these a few times and they are challenging. I think you did a good job with getting low and getting most of the flower in focus. Also, these are tiny flowers and the macro lens is an excellent weapon of choice for this orchid. Next time, try getting some images for stacking to get all of the elements of the flower in focus. Otherwise, I find the composition excellent and the soft BG goes well with the pink tones of the flower…Jim
Allen, this is an excellent look at the Fairy Slipper. I’ve shot them a few times and it’s nearly impossible to get enough dof without doing a stack. Since they grow in fairly dense forest, it’s almost always quite dark. The flower’s details and colors look great against the nicely oof background.
Allen: I think your comp and DOF choices worked out pretty well on this. I might have tried to get a touch more precise focus on the beard but this does work well for me as is. Well done. >=))>
