The photographer is looking for thoughtful feedback on the image as a whole, especially around the areas noted below.
Feedback Focus: Artistic + Technical
About This Image
I’m starting to explore Infrared photography and will attend a workshop later this month. This scene was taken near my home in the Shenandoah Valley. I was trying to capture the serenity of the area yet still portray the primary agricultural area.
Feedback Requested
I am interested in feedback on both the composition of the scene, the impact given it is an infrared image and any technical feedback on the post processing.
Technical Details
Camera: NIKON Z 6
Lens: 24.0-120.0 mm f/4.0
Focal length: 52mm
Shutter speed: 1/320s
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
The Z6 is converted to full spectrum and I was using a 590nm filter. I edited the raw image in Lightroom using Rob Shea’s white balance and color swap profiles to get an initial starting point. I fine tuned the colors and tonal adjustments using DXO Nik Viveza in the Nik Collection.
Hi Jeffrey,
I’m surprised there are no comments on this image so far. I find it quite pleasing. I’m unfamiliar with full spectrum IR photography, and had to look it up to understand what it is and how filters work. I’m intrigued as it might offer a use for my old Canon 7D.
As for critiquing the image, I really like the color palette. It is unusual, but that’s what I find most interesting: the steely blue sky, the blush colors in the early spring flowers. We are testing a new critique feature, so I’m going to try a few things here related to composition.
[A1] I might be inclined to remove this as it feels like an eye grabber
[Crop] This crop might make for a more balanced composition and remove the additional brush in the lower left, which gets too much of my attention. I’m playing with this tool for the first time, so this is just a suggestion. I struggled a little to get the crop to exclude the trunk on the left. Should be easy in your program. I intended the crop frame to be at the right edge, removing that tree on the left.
I hope you get more comments on this. It’s a wonderful image of a part of the country I miss very much.

I have never shot IR before but I have to say that I really like the color combination that it created for you. The pinkish orange landscape colliding with the gray blue sky is captivating. I also find the scene itself to be interesting. I like the fence line running through the scene and I love the trees. I definitely get a feeling of a family farm in the midwest.
What I don’t care for is the dark line running at an angle in the lower right corner. I would clone that out. I might also crop a smidgen off the left edge of the frame to remove the tree trunk along the edge.
Love this one.
I’ve not ever shot any IR myself but I like the aesthetic of it and maybe will one day get a camera converted or better yet, try to convert one myself. I have an electronics engineering technology background so I’m sure I could handle it plus I think it would be a lot of fun.
I think your image is quite nice and the colours are fantastic. I feel drawn more to the left half of the image so I mind be inclined to just have the image contain the left barn and some of the trees. Here is a crop I made of what I have in mind. I realize that the crop is quite significant so it would probably be better to shoot this again if you were inclined to do this. That’s the beauty of shooting close to home. One can always go back and try different things.
