Fast and Cold

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On the first warm day in a couple of weeks, my wife and I ventured to see Great Falls on the Potomac, interested in how it would look with snow. The mix of snow and rocks were a nice change from “the usual”. When it’s cold and the water level is low, the river acquires a significant green tinge. This look at a small section in the middle of the falls captures the main attractions of the day for me.

Specific Feedback

I like the zig-zag of the water, the mix of flow and splash in the water, the snowy rocks and the colors in the water.

The color in the water is beautiful; I can see why you were attracted. I also agree with your assessment about the zig zag and splash. It all comes together very well.

My only suggestion would be to play with adding contrast to the brighter parts of the image so they darken a bit. As is, they are bright enough that they overwhelm the green a bit, and the green is a wonderful part of the image.

Gorgeous Mark. I spent many a day skipping high school and hanging out at Great Falls, and never did I see it in snow like this. The water is just fantastic and I love the diagonals as it works its way through the rocks there,

I think the snow on the right, top frame, could get a bit of work. Clearly it’s in full sun while the other patches are in some dappled light, but it does distract from the water, which is the main show.

Nicely done!

Hi Mark,
You organized this beautifully with the zig-zag of water as it draws me nicely into the scene. I am also loving the slight green tinge of the water. Your chosen SS works well and has created some nice textures in the water. I also find the ice to be another wonderful element in the scene. I too could see the already mentioned bit of ice being toned down just a little, but that is minor stuff. Very nicely done.

I like this composition very much. I think another one with the top half of the image would have been great as well although this one is more complex and likely better. There are a couple of bright wedges coming in from the right frame that might be addressed.

This picture impresses me. So much is happening, and every detail is exciting.
As a composition, I see a vertical wavy line. You’re also somehow drawn into the picture.

Hi Mark, a beautiful picture of a stream—the colors are harmonious, the long exposure is very well done, and the flow of the water is wonderfully captured. However, my gaze is immediately drawn to the large patch of snow on the right-hand side, distracting me from the other details. I could well imagine dividing the picture— perhaps this would create two images that could be put to good use.
