Description
the house finch this one being a female, is a very common bird in my area. Certainly does not have the color of the male. I like the pose on this one. many in June the Pacific Northwest are tough months in which to shoot because it’s either cloudy, rainy, or sunny. You never know from one day to the index whether the weather report is correct and whether the weather will change within a few minutes. Yesterday when this image was taken, it was mighty cold and windy.

Very nice, David. I like the pose as well and the perch is quite nice, though if it’s not used up yet it could stand tweaking to be more parallel with your focal plane (if possible) as the out of focus moss is a bit distracting. Detail in the finch and nice even lighting make this a fine image of the bird.
last week, I did some sharpening on the tail of a bird and got criticism from Max Waugh who said I should’ve done nothing. So in this image I didn’t make any effort to sharpen the Bush. Yes there are ways to do things where you can sharpen and then add a layer and soften. I never would know what to do to please as many as I can. but I agree with you that the image would be better if the Bush was sharpened. Between All the issues I have with oversaturation and over sharpening I now have a new oneTo add.
HI David. I don’t think you could sharpen the moss-it would just look weird. You can only fix very slightly out-of-focus features with sharpening and that moss is definitely out. If it’s not a setup perch you probably can’t do anything about it since trying to move will only make the bird leave.
I did use a fill flash on this.I had some trouble setting it up and couldn’t get over 400 th so the sync speed and then all of a sudden I think the go much higher. So I probably could have increased the depth of fields which is what was really needed. My 400 F .28 with 1.4 extender gives one F4. But Depth of field is pretty narrow.I suppose that since the distance between the closest part of the bird and the Mas is not very much, maybe less than half an inch, I would have expected more sharply on the leaves.
Hi David
To me it is always the bird, if the frame is correct and the birds sharp, a nice looking porch is only a plus.
