Feral lovebird

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Many years back, pet lovebirds in the Phoenix area either escaped or were released. They started breeding and there’s now a sizeable population of them. They do well here, although they have a hard time when we have very high heat. They’re always fun to see.

I took this while I was trying out a 1.4 extender I recently got for my 100-400. It works well. The disadvantages are that you can’t get a larger aperture than f/8 and the autofocus struggles in some situations, although it gets there in the end.

I like the pose and the flowery environment, Don. Good detail and a complementary background. I like Sandy’s suggestion on adding a bit more canvas, if possible.

Sandy, Allen, thanks for the comments.

Wonderful detail in the plumage and excellent color, Don. There’s certainly no significant loss of image quality with the addition of the teleconverter. I agree that the one toe is perilously close to the edge of the frame and in general the bird is a bit crowded for my taste (but I now others that are all about filling the frame with the subject). Excellent pose and the flowers make a lovely perch.

Hi Don, gorgeous bird with wonderful pastel colors. Fine details captured. I agree with more room around the bird especially right and left.
