Description

Quite an old image, edited with current software to remove a few weeds across the body.
On a Yellowstone trip, we saw an elk in labor, with calf legs half-expelled. She had swum out to a small island in the middle of a river to give birth, to provide a degree of protection for her and the calf.
We watched as long as possible, before the light totally gave out. Going back early the next morning, this little calf had been born overnight and was struggling to it’s feet.

Very nice photo of the newborn elk. Clean and crisp looking. The blurred background helps put the emphasis on the calf while still giving a sense of the environment. Well done Sandy.
