Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I wasn’t sure whether to put this here or in Macro/Close-up since it’s probably ~8" wide. However, the lack of any central subject made me decide it belonged here. Yesterday morning we had had nice freezing weather overnight and just the lightest fall of snow. I noticed it on the birdbaths when I went out to de-ice them and immediately came back for my camera. I did take quite a few photographs of the flakes on the birdbath ice, but also photographed this flat rock beside our pond. I didn’t notice all the lichen on this until I processed the image and didn’t expect this much since this slab is probably only 15 years out of the quarry.
Specific Feedback
Even though there’s no one subject, I found it fun to explore this image and I’m mostly interested in whether others react the same.
Technical Details
Sony A7Rv, FE 70-200 f/4 semi-macro @ 200 mm, hand held, f/16, 1/160, iso 2500. Processed in LR & PS CC. I raised the shadows quite a bit using a curves adjustment through a TK darks 2 mask to avoid affecting the snow. I also used the old Topaz Detail plugin to increase microcontrast and help bring out the lichen. I also used a linear gradient mask in the lower left corner to bring up the blacks because it was very dark there. Taken yesterday at 9:02 a.m. under a light overcast.
