Foraging Western Sandpipers

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Small flock of sandpipers working the edge of Drayton Bay at fairly high tide. At least it kept them close to shore. At low tide it is a huge mud flat.

Specific Feedback

I liked the simplicity of the scene. Would have liked the front bird to be about an inch forward so hiss tail did not overlap. I was stuck and couldn’t move further.
Any comments are appreciated.

Technical Details

OM-1, OM 150-600mm, ISO 160, f /6.3, 1/500 Sec. Hand held.
LR and PS to remove a bright reflection off the prominent’s bird beak.

Nice reflections and cute birds. I would have waited for at least one more head to be up.

This is a very pleasing scene, Charlie. Nice color and detail in the peeps.

I do agree that it would have been very nice if the tail didn’t intersect the right bird, but I still like this trio a lot, Charlie. Beautiful detail and exposure on the front bird and it gave you a wonderful little head turn and the two supporting characters add a lot to the image in terms of telling the story.

Thanks. I went through about 20 photos looking for more with their heads up and not overlapping but, then they weren’t grouped together. Not really cooperative.

Birds can be so frustrating! But the pose of the center one, very nice lighting and plumage detail, and lovely setting makes up for reality! I love the reflections, too!

Hi Charlie
I like the low-angle, reflection and detail. I just thought I would look at a different framing. Hope you don’t mind.

I like @Peter_Morrissey’s framing!

Such cute little birds. Although the two right-hand birds overlap, the closest bird is such a star I don’t think it’s a huge deal. I really like how @Peter_Morrissey emphasized the birds. Although the original did show the environment, it really doesn’t add much and the crop focuses on the best part.

I like what Peter did. I always wonder how much to crop. The original areas didn’t add anything to the picture. Thanks for the feedback.,
