Description
Smooth-billed Ani, Brazil Pantanal
Ani are bizarre birds common in South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Florida.
In Brazil, it can get very cold at night, so they often bunch together to keep warm.
They have long, floppy tails, and are very clumsy in flight and when trying to land - usually just crashing into a perch.

The bunch of Ani are so fun Sandy. I think I count 13, that is just crazy. Good DOF to get all of them in focus. Nice feather details in the second image here too. BG is a bit busy, but the bird stands out well with the eye and beak in the sunlight.
I love the crowd, Sandy. I think I count 16, but several of those are just tails and it’s hard to tell whether it’s one or two. Regardless it’s a very interesting image and the second image gives a nice view of the individual bird.
I’d say at least 14, but hard to say the way they are bunched up. Very cool to get so many and with them facing both directions. Nice look at the solitary bird
Wow. That is quite the collage of anis. An excellent behavioral shot. Although the BG is busy, the dark subjects lessen the impact of the BG on the overall comp. Second image has excellent detail and I like the lighting on the bird’s head. You have seen some interesting birds from your travels. Well done!..Jim
Sandy, I love the group photo. Getting the two halves in different directions really sets it apart, and makes up for the imperfect surroundings. A fine behavioral shot.
