Forest Pierrot

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Though common in woodlands in many more southern parts of Asia, today was only the second time in 20 years that I’ve seen this species in Korea. I was happy that it posed for some time without showing any wish to avoid me! In fact, it let me gently move the branch so I could get a darker BG, in broad daylight. From top to bottom it’s about 1.5 cm.

Specific Feedback

Did I add too much canvas to the right? I thought it needed some breathing room there. All other comments are welcome too.

Technical Details

D500 1/500 f8 ISO 640

Denoise, tonalities in PS, Nik Viveza to brighten the head a bit. Canvas added to right and some darkening of greenish patch TL. Smart Sharpen and Noiseware at end.

Mike, what a beauty. I am so glad that he posed for you so well and wasn’t skittish. Wow, only the second siting in 20 years. I’m not sure I would have done so well at getting the shot, afraid I would miss it. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy like that, getting excited and not making good decisions. You did fantastic though. I think the composition is good with the amount of room on the right to give him room to take off if he wanted to. The black BG really makes him and the leaf stand out nicely. Very well done!

oh what a beauty you caught here! Funny how species labeled as “common” can be so elusive. Then to give you such a great perch and pose. So good. Exposure & focus are perfectly on the butterfly and I like the texture you have with the light coming slightly from the side. There is a lot of banding and streaking in the bg and may be a result of jpg compression. It looks like quite a small file.

Beautiful job, Mike. I’m on a small laptop tonight and with that screen it looks glorious. You managed a great angle to keep the whole thing in nice focus and I don’t mind the leaf going out of focus in the foreground.

Thanks @Shirley_Freeman @Kris_Smith and @Dennis_Plank . Kris, a touched-up version has now replaced the original, minus the banding.
