Welcome, Simon. I’m loving this picture. The way the blues of the mountains and the silhouettes of the trees seem to emerge out of the fog is wonderfully evocative and draws me into the frame. The amount of detail makes the image very compelling - a bit like the dance of the seven vails . I do, however, find the picture a bit bottom heavy and I wonder how it would look in a 16x9 format (cropped from the bottom.) I feel like it might better balance the lower brighter tones of the water with the similarly bright tones of the sky.
Welcome to NPN! I also love this image. There is a bit of cold mystery here- that isolated island, those unseen peaks, the fog. The quality of light and detail is good. I agree that the bottom should be cropped somewhat. I don’t think the extra space adds anything. Excellent work!
Welcome aboard, Simon and a really fine first post too. I quite like this image and I like it as presented. I find the rippling and different light on the foreground water provides nice additional layering and depth to the image and would be inclined to keep it as is. Excellent moody feel and sense of mystery to the image, too. Looking forward to seeing more of your work and reading your thoughts on the work of others! Welcome again.
Hi Kerry,

Hey Harley,
Love your dog! Thanks for the welcome and the time to review and comment…what a great site, I cant believe I’ve only just heard about NPN! I’m really hoping I can move my images on with some strong critique…
Thanks again
Simon.
Simon, welcome to NPN, this is a great first post. Fog can be a wonderful way to create mood in an image, which you have done to great effect here. I also like it when the softness of fog can be contrasted with sharp elements such as the trees here.
As the others have pointed out, I think the composition would benefit from using a 16:9 aspect ratio, and eliminating the bottom of the image. The reflections of the trees are not strong enough to be important in this scene, and I think you can eliminate some negative space at the bottom without losing the moodiness of the fog.
My other suggestion for a tweak relates to the color in the hillside in the upper right corner (URC).
Color is very subjective, but to my eye this looks too cyan, or maybe even green. I don’t know if that is natural looking. I think it should be more blue (for a cool mood creative effect), or neutral in color like the fog. Just my $0.02.
I look forward to seeing more of your work here at NPN. And don’t be shy about posting comments on other peoples images either, it is also a great way to learn.
Hey Ed,
Thank you very much for the detailed feedback, it is very much appreciated. Noted on the colour…I didnt actually do much in post, I think its a mixture of the frost and the fog making it look a bit weird but I do know exactly what you mean and agree a more blue tone would look better.
Thanks again and for the warm welcome
Simon
Simon,
Welcome to NPN; this is a fantastic first post with lots of mood. I am thoroughly enjoying the atmospherics with the fog and the air of mystery it creates. I have a couple of suggestions. The first would be make this more of a pano and get rid of some negative space with a crop from the bottom up to the ripples. I think that would place more of an emphasis on all the wonderful stuff going on in the upper 2/3rds of the image. The second would be to reduce the cyan on the mountain in the BG. I think those couple of tweaks would elevate an already fine image another notch. I hope to see more of your posts and I hope you comment on other’s images as well.
Welcome to NPN! This is a spectacular image, and one I would be proud to have. If it were mine, I’d think about cutting out some of the bottom and going with a 16:9 ratio as some of the other members have suggested. I sincerely look forward to seeing more of your work!
Simon,
Welcome to NPN! What a fantastic first impression you’re making. This is a wonderful and impactful first image.
Composition-wise, not sure there’s anything to be critical of here. Some are suggesting a crop - but if I was to crop, it would be to shave off the top, not the bottom. There is a subtle, yet distinct reflection at the bottom that includes the darker, calmer reflection. If it were mine, I wouldn’t encroach on that that. But at the top, all the fog is redundant and not adding value, you could crop a little (very little - don’t want to get too close to the exposed slope.)
The only suggestion I have would be some color tweaks. I would take a hue/sat adj layer and remove any magenta (I see a little around the island/fog around center. Also drop the cyan a bit as it’s a little strong in the exposed mountain slope on the right. And of course if you made those minor adjustments… that might indicate that you could go all the way to b&w with this as well.
This is a great image and one of those timeless moments that I’m pretty sure you will never see again - but now have it recorded for all time.
Welcome aboard. We look forward to your contributions and participation.

Like this very much, Simon. I take the point others have made but I wouldn’t change a thing - the fg seems to set off the trees and hills nicely; the overall tonality from the high whites to the odd deep black is very satisfying.
Hi Ed,
Really appreciate the feedback and the critique. Have to say this is a great site with some awesome images. It’s great to get such detailed feedback.
Thanks again, have a great weekend

Hi @SimonSaunders, welcome to NPN. You captured a great atmosphere. Did you try a panoramic crop? I think it will work well. Thanks for sharing.
