How do you feel bout the fact that this is still literally recognisable? I is really an abstract?
I feel that it is, and I quite like the ambiguity.

Hi Pieter – I am always happy to see photos of mushrooms! I agree with you about the lovely colors and textures in the mushrooms. I see this kind of photo as a small scene rather than an abstract. In my mind, a small scene is about the telling the story of a detail found in the natural world, which is how I interpreted this photo. I think most people who are familiar with wild mushrooms will recognize this photo as such. If you had focused only on the gills or the pattern on the top of the upper mushroom, filling the frame with just those details, I would probably consider that approach to be more of an abstraction. You would be obscuring the subject matter and scale while removing context.
