Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
Taken off the coast of Washington. I was trying for in flight shots, looking for something a little different as the GBH is a common subject. I am not good at flight shots, so took a ton of images.
Specific Feedback
To get the expression of the face as I want, I needed to crop out the wings. Does not having all the wings showing distract? The back ground seems a bit flat, as was the light during the time I was shooting.
Technical Details
Canon R 5, Canon R 100-500mm @ 472mm. 1/2000 F-7.1 ISO 500 Hand held.
Hi John, really enjoying the sharp detail in this image and it’s a GBH view not often seen. Most of us have probably enjoyed viewing them in flight with the wings fully extended, so not a distraction here. Also like the diagonal position of the wings. Very nice effort!
A very interesting image with lots of impact, John. I’d be interested in how much you cropped this as there’s some odd loss of detail in parts of the plumage that could be due to either a severe crop or some of the processing software out there. The Topaz all in one software, unless it’s backed way off in intensity is known for doing this kind of thing to an image and I suspect there are other over-enthusiastic software packages that do similar things. Other than those artifacts, I really like this image.

Great job, John, getting a BIF shot with the bird coming at the viewer. I think the impact of the shot is the head, so not seeing the entire wing span is fine.
Thank you for your comments.
