I noticed this Great Egret in this still pose amongst the Cypress trees as I was floating through the bayou. After processing the raw image in color I decided to try a black and white conversion. I felt that removing the color added emphasis to the white bird, helping it to stand out in its environment.

I like the composition, Ted, and the B&W works well. If you go left from the beak, there’s a skinny little stub that’s straight up and rather bright in places and it keeps trying to pull my eye right past the egret. Other than that, I like this image a lot.
My first thought was how well the egret stands out from the busy background. And how you’ve managed to allow the busy background to be still interesting, yet not overpowering the bird. The I read your description. Very cool Ted.
I like the composition, Ted. The black and white conversion tames the busy background and lets the egret standout, yet the trees still make for an interesting space for the eye to roam into.
