Gloomy Sligachan

Sligachan, Skye, Scotland

This is the “dreich” pal of the other gloomy shot I recently uploaded of the Quiraing. Sligachan has this wonderful triple arch pack bridge across the river with a stunning mountain backdrop, including the bulk of Marsco shown on the left, part of the mighty Cuillins. It is best photographed from the main road bridge but I should also emphasise caution because heavy lorries and passing traffic do tend to thunder past. That said if you go out early, shortly after sunrise the traffic flow is negligible (if not negligent), sunrise was in no way apparent on this occasion but once again I find myself drawn to the extreme gloominess of the scene and the impending heavy rain that shortly follows.

Hi @Ian_Cameron, i like very much the composition of this image. I see strong leading lines that bring the eye to the centre of the image (centre of the bridge for example). In my opinion an idea could be positioning a point of interest in this zone (a person ecc…). Thank you for sharing you image.

This is absolutely fantastic, Ian. I love the somber mood with the moody storm laden sky with just a hint of clearing along the peak on the left. I also think the character of the triple arch bridge compliments the mood in the scene perfectly. Beautifully done.

What a wonderful bridge, they don’t get much better than this. I agree with @Ed_Lowe, the somber mood and character of the bridge tells a nice story. Even though the colors are mostly grey, with some muted earth tones, there is a certain richness to the way the landscape looks. Beautiful job of processing this image. And the shutter speed did a lovely job with the flow in the river too.

My only concern with image is the near foreground. The LLC feels somewhat empty relative to the LRC. I can see why you want to include the rocks and flows in the LRC, they are very nice. But for my taste, the LLC is so empty that the image feels somewhat unbalanced. I think some degree of cropping from the bottom might be worth experimenting with. It’s a tough call I admit, but maybe crop just below the big rock in the river on the right.

Another wonderfully gloomy and moody image Ian.
