Great Egret

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’ve been striking out lately trying to take images worth posting. Subjects are too far away or just not doing anything interesting and in an uninteresting place. I did get this shot of a great egret flying at the neighborhood lake recently and thought I’d share.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts on general composition - the bird and the reflection.

I like the composition, Allen, and the light is beautiful. I haven’t checked it to be sure, but it looks as if the whites in the egret have picked up a bit of a green tinge from light reflecting from the surroundings. Since that;s the way nature works, I’ll leave it up to you whether to change it or not.

PS. I’m glad to hear you’re human. After what you’ve been posting this year, I was beginning to wonder.

LOL Dennis! Thanks - I thought I was on a pretty good run at the state park pond but the birds have really thinned out with the recent rains and higher water. Thinking the fish may be tougher to get for the birds.

Great light, and the egret contrasting against the dark greens is really eye-popping. The fuzzy reflection is nice as well.
Fine shot!

I know the feeling, Allen. And would agree with Dennis’s comment as well. The head seems a bit soft, but I’m not sure that matters. I was watching a video the other day where a bird photographer (Duade Paton) was listing the factors he felt were important in a wildlife shot and IQ was at the bottom. I like the flying pose and that the bird is coming at the viewer. The lighting is good. It’s a good habitat shot with nice colors and a nice reflection. Well composed and overall a pleasing image.

Hi Allen
This is really nice, just another wonder full day with mother nature.
Peter

Nice job handling the “white” bird ! And yes there is a green hue which perhaps you choose to keep, being natural!
