Great Gray Owl Gaze

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

I have a pal that’s been seeing a rare great gray owl so he took me out where he’s been seeing it and, lo and behold, there it was. It let us photograph it on two different perches for over a half hour! I had to make some “lip-squeaking” to get it to look at me. This is one of the 56 “keepers” that I got. It was late evening diffused light. Unforgettable.

Gorgeous, Dave. It is a rare treat to see one of these and you caught it on a great perch. the head on look is always a winner with this species. The only thing I can see that you might consider doing is de-emphasizing the out of focus branches to the left of the owl. they’re just sufficiently defined to grab my eye a bit. Either a bit more blur or some light cloning would do the trick nicely.

Wonderful!!! Great detail, perfect perch and lovely BG!

Lucky you, Dave. A bird that’s definitely on my bucket list. Great pose and detail and I like the perch. Great capture.

Excellent capture Dave. Suggested edits would be to either clone out or crop out the dark spot midway up the RH edge and adjust the WB to reduce the cyan cast. Pose and perch are awesome. Congrats on getting this one…Jim

Really nice catch Dave of a true beauty. Great view of the eyes and amazing feather pattern. I like the perch and background. Wonderful.

What a beautiful creature! As someone above said, bucket list species.
What an amazing experience you had with this owl.
I think it’s fine the way it is, but maybe just a touch of background darkening to deemphasize the branches on the left, and get it to match the darkness of the upper right hand corner. But such nice light on the owl.
Very nice.

Dave, congratulations on the EP!! Very well deserved!

Looks A+ to me! I would have been tempted to pull back a bit to show more of the environment the owl was in…but that’s a tough call on a show stopper like a Great Gray!
