Great Horned Owl Chicks + repost (color edit)

Repost with color edit:

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Seen this morning at the local state park. Love how the chicks blend in so well with the tree chosen for the nest.

Specific Feedback

The chicks are in shade but are backlit especially at the opening between the two trunks. Any thoughts on how that looks?

Technical Details

Canon R7, 200-800mm, monopod
ISO 6400, f9, 1/250s

Processed in DXO PureRaw 4 and Photoshop.

Oh! How gorgeous are these cuties. I love how they’re cradled by the tree in a rather flimsy looking nest. The little guy in the background is the icing on the cake.

Allen, I know nothing of the colouring of these birds, so perhaps, I should keep my thoughts to myself. Anyway, I feel the colour is a little off. Maybe a bit too green/yellow?

Thanks for the comment Glenys. I have already selectively reduced the greenish cast a good bit on the birds thinking it was from the surrounding foliage. I will be going out there again this morning and will give the color another look. The chicks seem to more of grayish to match the tree trunks rather than brown like the adults.

This is a very appealing shot, Allen. The chicks are cute. I like the way their plumage blends into the surrounding trees.

Initially I liked the color but I think Glenys is right.

The backlighting doesn’t bother me. It wouldn’t hurt to brighten the rear bird just a bit. Nothing is happening in the top third of the photo. You might consider cropping some off the top and the right.

Do you know what the chicks are thinking? I do…

When we grow up, we are going to eat you! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I can see a slight green tinge, and I agree the chick in the back could be brightened up a bit.

You folks who photograph birds have my utmost respect! :+1:

This is a lovely shot of the two owlets, Allen. That’s a beautiful nest site which should continue to offer some great opportunities for a bit longer. I like the interpretation that @Preston_Birdwell came up with.

Yes, this definitely needed a color redo. See repost above. All I did was hit Auto color :slightly_smiling_face: Good enough?
Thanks for the comments everyone!

Love the repost!!

I like the repost, Allen. Love the stare the two are giving you.

Definitely the repost, Allen. It’s a beauty.

I missed this earlier but have to add my cheers for a great capture! And the RP is just the right touch. It’s so frustratingly difficult to see color casts. Hope we get to see these guys grow up!

I love @Preston_Birdwell 's interpretation!!

The repost did the trick, Allen. It looks great!

Both ‘takes’ are great. Personally I prefer the more grey toned shot. And I agree with Preseton’s comment that one day I will eat you! My how mighty this small one can be in back of her mama! Awesome capture.

Great photo! Definitely better with the color separation. I didn’t even notice the little guy at first, but then an ahah moment.
