Grey-Headed Flying Fox

Image(s)

Image Description

There is a smallish colony of mixed flying fox species not too far from home. The colony has lived there for over 40 years. Despite the appearance of many bats, their numbers are declining, mostly due to habitat clearing.

I went out with a “bat person” to monitor the group around 10am. Not ideal for shooting anything, but I must admit, I was tickled to see the beautiful rendering of the foliage of the blue gum. It was odd that this little boy was quite actively searching for blossom. Not a great bat angle. I liked the yellow/green hint of pollen on his muzzle.

Glennie: I just love the variety and excellence of your images. I don’t recall ever seeing an image of this species so besides being incredibly artistically presented I find it a real treat to discover something new. The only thing I would change is I would print it and put it on my wall. Most excellent! >=))>

Holeee Cow! A wonderful rendering of the gum, and then there is a BAT! In broad daylight? I love his monkey-like pose! Totally superb!!

Glennie, this is a great, high key look at this bat and where it’s foraging. In a careful look, its claws are quite striking.

Fantastic image Glennie, so unique, I have never seen any “Flying Fox” images, this is so interesting. Great job with late morning light, I like the contrast between the subject and background, really helps to keep the focus on the behavior. So interesting!

Thank you everyone!

This has been such a wonderful Weekly Challenge for me. I’ve dredged up images I haven’t seen in a while.

You are fortunate to have fruit bats. I might be tempted to reduce the overall brightness of the image, but looks good as presented…Jim
