I’ve now gone in a different direction with this image. The little bat on the RHS seemed to be the most troublesome. There is/was a very awkward circle of bright light that encircled his head and didn’t look quite right, but he is stilll in the darkness and I’ve decided to keep him there .
This is just a wonderful image and greatly composed. The dappled light is perfect, with the main subject at the top brighter than the other two on the bottom. It’s not too dark at all Glenys. The subtle light adds to the sense of mystery, which is what these bats are all about. And that eye contact makes it come alive. Great work.
Glennie: Not the conventional first thought when one considers mammals but what a terrific shot. The dark is where they live and the spotlights in just the right place is inspired. My only suggestion/wish is for a tiny bit more detail on the lower right bat, perhaps try to bring out the eye a touch more. All in all this is a superbly crafted image. >=))>
What a great reminder that bats are mammals! I knew that, but most of them just don’t look the part. But these guys have the most amazing faces – rivaling those of dogs. I love the lighting and poses here but I think there is room to play a bit. I wonder about a dark vignette in the top corners and more light at the bottom (but keeping a vignetter there, too) – maybe even extend canvas a little at the bottom. There are some areas in the bluish shadows and near the top where contrast seems noticeably low. Mayne there is a tweak in those areas? A totally wonderful capture in any case!!
Glennie, I like how the overall darkness fits with their lifestyle. This seemed dark, until I turned up the brightness on my monitor for viewing during the day. A subtle bit of dodging on the darkest face might be good.
