Grey Necked Wood Rail

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken in a very dark pond in Costa Rica. I had no choice but to use a fill flash. It is a tight crop but there is so much Poorly lit foliage all around.

Specific Feedback

anything that it helps

Beautiful job on the rail under difficult conditions, David. I’d be interested in seeing the surrounding vegetation as I wonder if the exposures could be recovered in the raw processing. I’ve seen some amazing recoveries of late and LR has gotten a lot more versatile and easier to work with.

David - these are so hard to catch in good light - great job!
Bright colours and eye, nice pose, and a bit of environment.
Maybe just a little tight on the top and left?
Really fine image!

Good use of the flash. Detail looks excellent. Nice pose and though cropped, still has a nice environmental feel.

Everyone for your comments.

David,

I was going to ask if you used a flash as it was non mentioned in the technical section, but you answered that already. This bird probably already has lighter toned feather on its “chin” and cheeks, but I was wondering if the flash did not hit that area with too much light? I really like the reflection of this bird’s legs in the water for some reason.
