Happy Turkey Day!

Description

I was sitting quietly in the open by the hummingbird feeder Sunday, working on tweaking the setup for better light, when a cobra-like head came cautiously weaving out from behind the tall foundation of the deck on my left. Several more followed and proceeded to vacuum up dropped bird seed. With the 2X on, my zoom range was 600-1000mm so I did portraits. These are adolescent males and apparently totally clueless, as they kept looking at me seeming to wonder if they should do something. They have been hanging out in the area and I’ve counted 18 of them.

We’re heading to older daughter Annie and Scott’s for Thanksgiving and their friend Russ, a trained chef, always brings a huge turkey. I sent these to everyone and said if any last minute disaster befell the turkey, let us know and we’d bring one.

Denoise and crop in LR and the first 3 exported from there. The last one went into PS to remove the bird feeder pole on the left edge.

Great portraits Diane.

Have you ever had wild turkey? Its very delicious, I think more so than the domesticated ones.

We haven’t, but have been tempted. Years ago a “friend” gave us a goose they could no longer keep. One day it tried to attack our two-year-old daughter. Ted was out weed-eating at the time and missed the goose’s neck but cut off its tail. The next day we killed it and tried to clean it. Not a pretty sight. It did finally make it to the oven, but did not win any culinary awards.

C’mon up. You can have all you can carry. They dig up my plants on the drip lines.

These poor gentlemen might think about a Go Fund Me page in hopes of seeking out support toward some facial make overs… :star_struck:
Have a wonderful T-Day… :+1:

Fun shots, Diane. Hope your Thanksgiving is joyous.

Great portraits. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

Happy Thanksgiving, Dianne. Nice portraits. They’re in my neighborhood as well; saw a flock of 22 on my walk yesterday.

Diane:

I’m really surprised that both you and Allen have so many of these critters hanging out. I suppose there’s a downside, but they seem to be common. These are nice images with good detail and color. Nicely framed. The whole group of them makes for pleasing images. I would guess you would have a happy turkey day.

Thanks guys – @Youssef_Ismail, @Paul_Breitkreuz, @Dennis_Plank, @Jim_Gavin, @Allen_Brooks and @David_Schoen! At different times of the year we see different flocks. They seem to be short-distance migrants – they will be around for several months then disappear or move on. Several months ago it was a flock of hens with a couple of dozen babies. We have lived here for 50 years and only started seeing them maybe 25-30 years ago. The first time I saw one (from a distance) I thought it was something that had escaped from neighboring Safari West. Peter Lang (the owner) said he had just started seeing them, and was delighted. They have 400 acres, much undeveloped, and Pepperwood Preserve, adjacent to the north, is 4000 acres of undeveloped nature habitat, so they have a good environment. (Along with wild pigs and the occasional mountain lion.) But there are flocks of them in town, too, where they seem to have adapted nicely.

We had a domestic one for Thanksgiving and it was excellent!

Hi Diane
Can you have number four report to casting? She has the job. Nice work.
Peter

Thanks, @Peter_Morrissey! Are these girls? Don’t know why I assumed boys except maybe the way they chase one another around. They run in crazy circles and figure eights around trees.

Hi Diane
I just guessed they were girls. The head shots just called out to me as 8 by 10 color glossies for a ad agency. Nice work.
Peter

Hah! That could be. Years ago I submitted stuff to Getty but it got to be more work than it was worth.
