There’s a lot of buzz going around about how the “craft” of photography is migrating from “boring” sRGB to “epic” HDR. For what it’s worth, I’ve been ernestly migrating that way for some several months now.
I understand that all of the mainstream browsers now support HDR images. Ditto for many of popular post-processing platforms, the latest batch of computer displays, etc., etc.
I’m curious to know how many of you are also making the switch. What have your experiences been so far?
And on a more practical level, does the NPN platform now support HDR file formats such as Ultra HDR, JPEG JXL, HEIC/HEIF, etc.? And if not, is there a roadmap/timeline for when this will happen?
I just stumbled on your post here. I am not an expert in file formats, display resolutions, or trends. But for myself and my photography I use HDR sometimes and it is scene dependent. Not every image I shoot is it appropriate or needed to be made “epic”. There is much more nuance, mood, & purpose in how I process and display my images.
Back to your point, as displays and camera resolution/capabilities continue to evolve there seems to always be a soup de jour that is marketing hype and practical improvements in technology. I am sure @David_Kingham would have much better insight on this, including what lies ahead for the NPN platform.

HDR…ugh, it’s been a contentious subject for so long that it might be talked out. And “epic” (totally understand why you put this in quotation marks), I mean…that’s such a trendy term and honestly not one I’m all that interested in since it’s an easy effect to achieve either by applying over-the-top edits or using machine learning to “improve” photos. These days when stuff like this pops up in a feed for me, I usually scroll right by as my eyes glaze over from the “epicness”. It’s all suspect to me and although many people respond to this style, I wonder if it’s just there to get likes or whatever, not to express anything from the human heart.
For me, my interest in the use of higher resolution photos on the net will come down to detail, especially in macro photography, but also for birds and other wildlife. Seeing something on a screen in a more finely focused way than I probably could IRL is intriguing and I’d probably take advantage of it with my own work if NPN supported those file types.
