The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
Hello all. This was taken from Mt. Laguna, in east San Diego County. I was on the PCT, and overlooking the Anza Borrego desert. I just wanted to capture a dramatic landscape shot.
Specific Feedback
Overall, I am happy with the photo itself. However, I just can’t seem to get the effect I want in post. It just doesn’t look right to me, even after much work. Maybe it’s the color of the rocks in the foreground, or maybe the actual sky needs to be more contrasty / dark? I’d be grateful for any suggestions.
Technical Details

I’m sorry to contradict you but I like the photo as it is specially the neutral color of the rocks. There is depth and movement. It’s difficult and probably counterproductive to increase the contrast in a photo that is foggy and cloudy for more than half its dimentions. And I like also the title.
Hi Frank,
I quite like this. The dark foreboding sky contrasts nicely with those whiter FG clouds. I also like the way the diagonal lighter cloud draws the viewer into the scene. Although having not been there the color of the rocks looks very natural to me. My only suggestion would be a crop from the right side as that open area below the cloud and behind the rock bothers me a little. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course.
I agree; the way the clouds are flowing into the scene works well. I bet it was fun to be there!
There’s odd, subtle, magenta/green blotches in the sky. I like it better with those removed. I do think there is room to increase the contrast of the clouds, especially toward the top.
Here’s an example with the blotches removed and a bit more contrast up top; I think this would look even better with @Ed_Lowe 's crop.
My initial reaction to this image wasn’t very strong but the more I study it, the more I really like it. Colors, contrast and processing look great and it’s a simple but strong composition. At first I thought maybe darkening the dark clouds a touch while leaving the whites alone might be a slight improvement but the longer I’ve viewed the image, I don’t think it would. An important detail I really enjoy is how the large cloud on the right and the smaller one on the left both converge and “point” to the distant desert, which drives my eye into and through the image. Bravo!
